Women have always taken fancy to men’s wear- be it the androgynous suit-pant or carrying a box cut kurta in style. Designers are not hesitant in pushing the gender clothing styles. The fashion world is beginning to witness more of the “UN-GENDER” fusion styles. When designer Masaba Gupta crafted the short dhoti version of the sari for Sonam Kapoor, it instantly took news and became a head turner. The feisty trend spread like wildfire, which further led to newer breathtaking versions of the cut as displayed by Sougat Paul’s Soup. His tangerine pleated skirt paired with belted sea green top without the pallu version has given new meaning to the phrase sari.

The whimsical experimentation has now gone beyond the limits of fabric choice, extending to the petticoat and blouse. The new-age fashionista can now effortlessly pair a pre-constructed fusion sari with a pair of palazzo/dhoti pants to a movie, or earn style accolades by daring a lycra sari wrapped midway over a pair of tights/skinny jeans for a cocktail party. With the mélange of state-of-the-art fabrics, comfort elements, unconventional structure and a geographically border-less appeal, this classic heritage ensemble is no longer confined to conventional occasions or customary events. Moreover, they are now slowly paving their way into cocktail parties.

With the extinct of dhotis among the male clothing fashion, the designers have now geared up to save this traditional garb as a female outfit. In order to gel this ethnic outfit with current contemporary styles and to satisfy the younger generations’ staggering need for fashion greed, a handful of designers are now interpreting this utopia bygone garb for the modern women-on-the-go. Pairing it with unconventional pieces and inviting imagination and statement at every stage possible.
