The latest collection by Boucheron, called Bleu de Jodhpur, is a tribute to the Blue City created under the high patronage of the Maharaja Gaj Singh II of Marwar-Jodhpur, the first offering of its kind for the house. Combining traditional Indian techniques and materials with the house’s own heritage, The collection offered up several remarkable pieces, such as the Mendhi brooch-necklace and a reversible necklace of diamond-set Makrana marble—the same as was used to build the Taj Mahal—on one side and crystal inlaid with diamonds and sapphires on the other.

Chopard has the honor and laurel of having recently been made an official haute joaillerie member of the very French, very official Fédération Française de la Couture, joining just eight other high jewelry maisons who can claim such a position. Well deserved too, as the extraordinary Peacock earrings from the Animal World collection prove. Set in white gold and titanium, this feathered pair boasts in full glory, bursts of diamond beads, sapphires and amethysts, with brilliant Paraiba tourmaline drops suspended from their tails. You could wear a potato sac for a dress and still look the part when wearing them, they’re that glamorous.

Chanel makes no bones about its legacy, endlessly reinventing the symbols beloved of Coco Chanel, and the new collection is a sweetly concise riff on the foursome amalgamation of these. Drawing immense inhalation for nature, Les Intemporels de Chanel takes the comet, the lion, the camelia and the ribbon as its inspiration, and sticks to color palette of near uniform black and white, except for a splash of color via two ribbon-inspired cocktail rings sporting a blue and a pink sapphire. But the camelia pieces make the best use of the monochromatic look, with bold black spinels standing out against white diamonds and pearls as they outline the flowers’ petals.

The well known French company, Cartier released a new jewelry collection, with extreme focus on sophistication. The immediate inspiration coming from oriental sources. Collection L’Odyssee de Cartier was envisioned to create motives from Indian, Chinese and African cultures. Ethnic motives were created by the brand by creatively incorporating golden topazes, pearls and orange tourmalines, all throughout its collection.

In addition to its major launch for Fall, the Opéra line, which was unveiled during couture week, Buccellati presented a white gold rigato-engraved cuff with a nearly 114-carat moonstone, one of the last pieces designed by the late Gianmaria Buccellati. The house also showed 50 band rings, all different, with colorful center stones. Meanwhile, the Pegasus-inspired wing-shaped earrings that hook over the ear demonstrated the emerging creative influence of Lucrezia Buccellati, Gianmaria’s granddaughter and the house’s fourth-generation designer.

The 29-piece Secrets by Harry Winston collection packs a few surprises. The 4 Cs

A diamonds price, uniqueness and glimmer are determined by factors that are commonly known as the 4 Cs, these are: color, clarity, carat and cut. Before deciding on acquiring your diamond, it is quintessential to understand why two diamonds that may look exactly similar are actually valued differently.

Color

Diamonds naturally vary in color with the majority of them on the market being sold as near colorless. The color range of diamonds starts at D, which has the least color and ends at Z ,which has a light yellow color and then into the fancy colors. Diamonds usually have subtle disparities which may not be observed by the naked eye. Due to the spike in fashion-led trends, colored diamonds are becoming exponentially more popular and valuable such as the Chocolate Diamonds.

The highest grade diamond colors D, E or F are perceived as the ‘collection colors’ in lieu of their scarcity and fantastically white brilliance.

Diamonds colored G, H, I, or J are classified near-colorless and present a good value in terms of its buying price. G and H are the more sought-after in this particular near-colorless group and are also coined as ‘rare white diamonds’. Diamonds in I and J colors are slightly warmer in hue and do command a reduction in price.

Grades of K to N display visible signs of yellow color and are not in demand. Viewed as being poorer quality, there is less demand by the industry and consumers making these grade of diamonds fantastic for dress rings, brooches and alternative jewelery. Undoubtedly, the single solitaire engagement ring demands a better, whiter colored diamond.

Even the light yellow diamonds from N to Z are still marvels of nature that took millions of years to crystallize , yet they will always be preferred and treasured than a man made synthetic gem stone.

Clarity                                                                                   

Clarity measures diamond flaws, called inclusions, which might appear as tiny spots, clouds, or cavities. Inclusions are graded on a scale of perfection called clarity, which means that the lesser inclusions a diamond has, then the greater the clarity and hence making it more valuable. The clarity paradigm is reminiscent that it is quite common for diamonds to have natural occurring flaws making them rarely perfect. The shimmer of the stone will not be greatly influenced by inclusions as they can be easily camouflaged by the setting or the mount. To summarize, all conditions being perpetual, the less inclusions the greater the life and sparkle of a diamond and the more one will pay.

 Cut

The term cut in an accurate sense defines the diamonds ‘make’, i.e. symmetry and dimensions. The diamond’s cut therefore, influences its capability to handle light refraction and create sparkle, scintillation and life all the same time. Facets are the flat, polished surfaces on a diamond. Well cut and proportioned facets on a diamond will make better use of light, allowing it to be dispersed and reflected from one facet to another, releasing the diamond’s brilliance. A diamond is said to be “well cut” when the diamond’s facets are in alignment and allow light to refract within and then disperse through the top of the diamond. With perfect light dispersion emerges a beautiful diamond sparkle that every girl dreams of.

Considering the symmetry and finish of the stone, a diamond can be cut in various ways; to be heavier, thus gaining more value, or to hide or reduce inclusions. Jewelry craftsmen transform a rugged diamond to a gleaming one by polishing tiny facets into the rough stone. These can vary from diamond to diamond, so the shape and the quality should be taken into consideration.

A symmetry that enhances the optimal light return is known as Excellent or Ideal, diamonds with Premium and Very Good symmetry are well cut diamonds and have abundant amount of sparkle and presence.Good symmetry represents value for money but will not capture all the potential light return but will have a nice sparkle. Fair and Poor cuts should be avoided as they may be too shallow or deep and have a less than satisfactory performance.

Carat

Diamond weight impacts the price most dramatically out of the various diamond characteristics. This is the reason why, some diamonds have poor cut to retaining a rougher diamond and larger carat size equating to a higher selling price. Diamonds are measured in carats, which signifies the weight, rather than the size. Over sized carat weights are rarer and more precious. The carat weight does not reflect the size of a diamond, so at times the stone might appear bigger but may weigh less, so it is worth taking your time to absorb its glory.

Carats are split into points where 100 points are equal to one carat.

• ½ carat diamond – 50 point or 0.50 carat diamond
• ¼ carat diamond – 25 point or 0.25 carat diamond  

In a situation, when there is more than one diamond on a piece of jewelry such as on a diamond cluster ring or a three stone pendant, the stones are weighed together rather than individually.

Carat and then clarity , have taken the responsibility as the two key price drivers and often shopping for diamonds just under the popular sizes of 0.50ct, 0.75ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct, and 2.00ct can yield a better cut and a favorable price.

Selecting the right diamond or in turn the most flattering ring for your finger is a lot like choosing the right sunglasses for your face shape. Yellow gold. There’s lots of evidence that the sunny metal will stay popular in later 2015. It’s the most complimentary accessory for all the 1970s inspired attire on spring runways, and there was lots of yellow gold at the major 2015 red carpets. To summarize — stock up!

Layering necklaces. The relaxed silhouettes of spring coupled with a bonanza of different necklines means that layering styles will be worthwhile additions to jewelry boxes. These pieces can be multi-strands or singles layered with others.

Stacking rings. Fashion’s relaxed silhouettes call for casual accessories, including layered looks on the hand. These can have cabochons cuts of gemstones, pavé, tiny motifs, or simple metal-intense designs. Build a bigger look with lots of small, slim styles. Also, dainty  midi rings seem to be staying for the next couple of seasons too!

1960s–1970s motifs. These will be bohemian — think owls, beads, feathers, and fringe — or stylized geometric forms like zigzags or circles. Runways for Spring 2015 and Pre-Fall lean heavily on these two decades for inspiration, so accessories should complement the clothes accordingly.

Metal-intense statement cuffs. Nothing makes a statement like a big old cuff bracelet. These chunky pieces pair well with the minimalist-inspired fashions still in the market, and the metal medium allows designers to get artful and creative with carved effects, textures, finishes, and volume.

Ear climbers or cuffs. Comet-inspired styles that seemingly creep up the ear made a splash in many collections this year, and they’re not going anywhere in 2015. Climbers are often stud or stud-and-hook combination pieces that snake up the ear lobe, and shoppers young and old love them for their modern, edgy aesthetic.

Vintage-inspired designs. There were so many baguette cuts this year in so many lines! Not to mention the Art Deco influences still going strong. In 2015, the old will surely continue to inspire the new — and new purchases. The beauty of the past is alive and well in present-day jewelry.

Purples, pinks, and reds. Pantone’s Color of the Year Marsala may not be so inspiring, but at least surrounding shades on the color wheel are pretty. Muddy-red Marsala could give way to softer pinks and lavenders in stone choices this year, which are two ways to color-block beautifully with the drab red hue. In general, keep prettier color cousins in mind when adorning your Marsala-colored attire.

Whimsical color combinations. There were plenty of patterns and crazy color combinations—remember Chanel’s rainbows?—on runways for Spring and Pre-Fall 2015, so accessories should nod to those aesthetics in the form of mosaics of color, playful trios of hues, more rainbows, or single pops of color to highlight one in a pattern.

Statement necklaces. Just as varied earring styles reigned supreme in 2014, necklaces will take that must-have spot in 2015. You will want bibs, chokers, and long and short pendant and station numbers on hand to adorn fashion’s veritable buffet of necklines, some pieces that will be ideal for layering, while others will simply make a strong outfit statement. Style Aria - For our readers, please tell us about how Art Karat came about, and your background in jewelry design?

AKM – I am a trained gemologist and have always been fascinated with bespoke jewelry pieces and that led to the creation of Art Karat. The landscape of jewelry scene in India has changed over the last few decades. People have become more open to the experimental form of jewelry and are not scared to try out precious and semi-precious jewelry as part of their life.

Style Aria – What is your design philosophy? Where do you draw inspiration from?

AKM – My design philosophy is mainly based on one factor – to see jewelry as a piece of art, to be able to adorn yourself with beautiful and unique designs. I also prefer to use as many vibrant colors as possible in each of my creations so as to stand out among the plethora of jewelry designers today. I also believe that women from every age group should be able to relate with my designs and wear it with pride. My main inspiration comes from human contact. I have always been drawn to the rich cultural heritage of our past and have been inspired to create an alternate line of jewelry based on silver, focused on unique designs and excellent craftsmanship. Art Karat jewelry is a beautiful blend of classic and contemporary design. Our aim is to create a distinct line of jewelry with stunning pieces which adorns a woman’s body. Moreover, to be able to see people wearing your jewelry and loving it, is so fulfilling!

Style Aria – What are 3 jewelry must-haves for this season, according to you?

AKM – The 3 jewelry must haves for this season are Earrings, Necklace, Bracelet. All three are statement pieces on their own and by wearing any one of them one can certainly upgrade one’s look and give a classic twist to your ensemble.

Style Aria – Which is your favorite go-to piece from the Umrao Jaan collection and why?

AKM – All the pieces from the Umrao Jaan collection are close to my heart but if I have to pick one it will definitely be the Hasli with pearls. Personally, I love this piece as I believe its a very versatile piece and can provide an edge to one’s outfit/look.

Style Aria – 3 jewelry trends that are here to stay for the long term, according to you, and every style conscious woman should invest in?

AKM – Kundan jewelry, Diamond jewelry and Temple jewelry from South India with religious figures and motifs are unbelievable beautiful.
Each of the above are gorgeous trends and I believe are here to stay and will never be out of style. These are time-tested classic pieces which every style conscious woman should own. These are true examples of timeless beauty.

Style Aria – Fun statement bling vs. elegant classic pieces – your pick for a night of socializing?

AKM – As I mentioned earlier, I love to create pieces using vibrant hues. According to me even an ordinary piece of jewelry can look fabulous depending on the way one styles it. So, both fun statement bling and elegant classic pieces are the perfect companion for a night of socialzsing depending on what you pair them with!

Style Aria – If you were only allowed to wear one kind of jewelry for the rest of your life, what would be your pick and why?

AKM –  If I were allowed to wear only one kind of jewelry for the rest of my life it will be a Polki with diamond ring or a solitaire ring. The best explanation, I guess, would simply be because I find them absolutely stunning and would love to wear them for every single day of my life.

1. Unmounted Heart Shaped Diamond.

Weighing heavily (56.15 carats), its one part ‘Cullinan 1’ contributed to the beauty of Britain’s Crown Jewel Collection being sold for a whopping amount of 11 million dollars. Marketed as ‘Love at First Sight’, in July 2003, Christie, the seller auctioned off the piece with an exorbitant amount of over $700,000.

2. The Marie- Louise Diadem.

Earlier studded with emeralds but now mounted with turquoise stones, in 1962, this iconic piece went on display at the Louvre in Paris. It had 1,006 old mine-cut diamonds (weight: total of 700 carats) and 79 Persian turquoise stones (Weight: an astounding 540 carats).

3. Empress Eugenie’s Bow Brooch

Made in 1855, this brooch was originally designed as an old European-cut diamond carved bow made especially for Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie (lucky her!). Intended to be a buckle for a diamond belt, Eugenie asked for it to be turned into a brooch, a slightly more intricate version. The President of Louvre, Henri Loyrette arranged a private sale with a New York maker to bring the historical jewelry piece back to its French homeland and paid a roaring $11 million for its comeback.

4. The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond.

Of some of the spendthrift collection of jewels in the world, Elizabeth Taylor owned the purest one too. With her perfect 33.1 carat cut diamond engagement ring from her two-time husband, Richard Burton didn’t spend a penny less than $305,000 for it to be seen on his lover’s finger in the year 1968.

Fun Fact: Elizabeth’s diamond size is more than twice the size of Kim Kardashian’s engagement ring!

5. The Logan Sapphire.

One of the second largest known stone in the world, this beautiful Sapphire approximately weighs a magnificent 422.99 carats. One of the kind and one of the largest cushion-cut stones in the world, it is known to be one of the most famous sapphires ever. This unparalleled beauty is set in a brooch with 20-round cut diamonds of 16 carats each surrounding it to emphasize the brilliance of it.
