431-88 by Shweta Kapur was one of the few spring/ summer collections at Amazon India Fashion Week that totally blew us away! Kapur’s collection was a neat amalgamation of the “formal” and the “sporty”. It is very aptly named “The Misfits”, and it introduced the novelty of this season – the Sporty Sari or the Sari With A Twist.
Drawing inspiration from the garment that’s synonymous with the Indian woman, Kapur went so deep into her research, that the drapes and pleats of the sari started resonating with the subculture of punk, driven from the never-ending quest of establishing individuality, originality and a DIY spirit that defined the 70’s punk era. The Pallus became hoodies, the hint of the sari waist and the back became the tears and slashes that were associated with punk.
The clothes also featured mesh panels that were laser cut to form Mughal Jali inspired motifs. The color palette was mainly soothing neutrals with a some blues and pinks thrown in sparingly. Fabrics used in the collection were majorly crepes and georgettes, which were accentuated with strips of patent leather.
Though we’re not sure if the sporty sari will stick around as a classic wardrobe item, but we are super glad for its refreshing break of monotony! With every new season comes a lot of different new versions of the classic Sari, but we have to say… 431-88 by Shweta Kapur’s version was the best one we saw in a long time.
